On Mother’s Day: Curated ideas for spoiling Mom

Looking for some inspired ideas for Mother’s Day? We’ve put together a list curated to your Mom’s favorite pastimes and interests. You’ll find a range of price points (starting at free!) because we know that the best gifts are not necessarily the most expensive ones but the ones that come from the heart.

For the Mom Who Loves to Cook

If spending time in the kitchen is what your Mom loves to do, then she probably loves browsing through recipes and discovering new cookbooks. Appetite for Books in Montreal is a store that sells cookbooks – exclusively! You can shop in person or browse through their online store to find a new cookbook to add to your Mom’s library. If your Mom’s bookcase is full but she can still never get enough new recipes, The New York Times Cooking app is an amazing resource for delicious recipes. A monthly subscription to the app gives you access to thousands of outstanding recipes that can be saved in a digital recipe box. You can search the recipes by ingredient, meal type, nationality, level of difficulty and dietary restrictions to help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

For the Mom Who Loves Being Active

One of the very few upsides since the pandemic began has been the increased availability of quality online fitness classes. This has been a game changer for busy people, like Moms, who previously could not squeeze in a trip to the gym. There are free classes and paid subscriptions for every budget as well as for a very wide range of activities. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • The Nike Training App: this free app has been around forever and offers good quality workouts in yoga, HIIT and strength and all at no cost. You can select the level (beginner, intermediate, advanced), length and level of intensity of your workout. Install this app on your Mom’s phone and pair it with a new yoga mat for a thoughtful and practical gift!
  • Fitness Blender offers a collection of 600 free workouts as well as a paid option that offers more guided, personalized workouts. Led by personal trainers, Kelli and Daniel Segars, Fitness Blender aims to offer science-based fitness and nutrition advice to help their community feel fit and healthy.
  • For the yogi Mom,  Yoga Tree offers a monthly subscription - the first month is free. Attend live classes online or take classes on demand whenever the time is right for you.

If your Mom loves to keep her hands busy, try one of these knitting kits from We Are Knitters. Order the full kit, including the pattern, needles and wool to give Mom a fun project to work on (and maybe a fun gift for you once she’s done!). Choose from knitting projects for sweaters, scarves, blankets as well as crocheting, needlepoint, macrame, embroidery, weaving and latch hook.

For the Book-Loving Mom

If your Mom’s ideal afternoon is spent curling up with a good book, check out this brilliant Canadian company’s offerings. Sweet Reads Box offers monthly subscriptions or a one-time box to send your Mom. Each box includes a novel chosen from a top bestseller list such as The Globe and Mail, or the NY Times, an item connected to the novel’s storyline/theme/setting, a delicious drink to set the mood and a sweet treat to enjoy while reading.

For the Outdoorsy Mom

Long walking bridge

If your Mom is always on the lookout for a new walking or hiking trail, then the All Trails App is custom made for her. This app allows you to search for walking and hiking trails by area, length, difficulty, duration, route type and rating. The free plan gives you access to over 100 000 trail maps in over 180 countries. The paid pro plan gives you access to additional features such as downloadable maps and off-route notifications.

For the Plant-Loving and Gardening Mom

If your Mom loves being surrounded by plants, we think that she would love this mini herb garden kit that can be kept in the kitchen or brought outside once the weather warms up. With this mini garden, she’ll always have fresh basil, cilantro, chives and parsley at her fingertips. For a Mother’s Day gardening splurge, we love the Vegehome indoor garden. This innovative garden system allows you to grow a variety of over 20 types of vegetables and herbs inside year-round.

DIY Ideas to Pamper Mom

We love the idea of home-made gifts. Show Mom how much you love her by putting together these DIY body and lip scrubs. After a long winter, an exfoliating scrub is a great way to help Mom get ready for summer. This easy citrus scrub recipe from Somewhat Simple can be placed in a mason jar topped with a pretty ribbon. Pair it with this DIY lip scrub from the Honest Company. If soaking in a hot bath is your Mom’s idea of heaven, help her to relax and to relieve achy muscles with these homemade bath salts (recipe by Elizabeth Rider). You can add dried flowers and Mom’s favorite essential oil to make it look and smell beautiful.

For the Mom who Craves Coziness

Lazypants X Nuknuuk

This is our chance to toot our own horn because we have your head-to-toe solution to coziness. Try our Nuknuuk X Lazypants hoodie and jogger in premium, plush-lined fleece available in black, grey, baby pink and burnt orange. Pair with our Joy or Becca slipper available in a range of colours to match.

Although we have listed a plethora of great ideas, we want to finish with what we think is the essence of Mother’s Day. It is a day to say thank you and I love you to someone who has given so much. Wishing you a very special and loving day with the Mom or Moms in your life.
