6 Steps to Getting Fit for the Summer

There’s no denying that spring has well and truly arrived. You’re relaxing, kicking back in your Nuknuuk slippers and enjoying glasses of wine on the patio. Days are longer and warmer and significantly less painful than they were in February. It’s all fun and games...until bathing suit season.

If you’re anything like us, your summer clothes are fitting a bit tighter than you remember. No need to panic - winter weight gain is totally standard. It’s not really so much about how you look, anyway. It’s more about how you feel. Here are 6 tricks to help you with look and feel amazing this summer!

1. Set a (real) goal

Make it a goal that is beyond weight. The number on the scale doesn’t matter as much as you think it does, and though you’ve heard it many times over...muscle really does weigh more than fat. With weight loss, plateaus are common, so don’t panic if you start stagnating. Set goals that are bigger than numbers on a scale. Aim to run a long route and don’t stop exercising until you can complete it. The endurance and strength you’ll gain will help you achieve it, no matter what the scale says.

2. Clean up your diet!

A huge chunk of your results will rely heavily on what you’re putting in your body. Believe it or not, 80% of your success when it comes to getting healthy will depend on your diet. Exercise all you want, you can’t out-train a bad diet!  We honestly cannot stress the importance of this enough.  Whether you want to count calories or cut out certain foods, this is arguably the most important step you can take.

3. Find the routine that works for you

Everyone’s different. Seriously, different things work for different people. Some people are total gym rats and some train the hardest in the comfort of their own homes. Some like waking up at the crack dawn and some are strictly after-dusk exercisers.

As human beings, we’re designed to be active.  If you don’t like to move...it’s time to try new things until you find something that you do like.  Sign up for a new class, join a running club, try out something in your basement. It doesn’t matter, just keep trying new things until you find something that you like. And then do it as often as you can. You’re way more likely to adhere to your workout plan if it actually fits your style, so it’s important to figure this out. Once you find the workout that you genuinely love, it’ll start feeling less like a chore and more like a fun activity.

4. Cardio is good, but so is strength-training

Cardio burns fat like crazy. We know. But so does building lean muscle! Strength and endurance require strong core muscles, arms and legs. The notion that weights are for men is rubbish. Strong is sexy. Just don’t overdo it by going too hard too soon - it can lead to (serious) injury.

5. Switch things up!

Eventually, you’ll probably get bored of your routine. It happens. Switch things up whenever necessary. Add in a weekly challenge. You don’t have to do the same exercises every time. Boredom dangerously leads to demotivation. There are so many different types of exercise (spinning, swimming, running, interval training, circuit training, yoga...) Who said you have to stick to one?

6. Keep a food journal

Seriously! It can feel like a forced effort in the beginning, but people do this because it actually works. Actively writing down what you eat will definitely help you keep calories in check.

Like we said, it’s all about feeling good. Looking good is absolutely a bonus - don’t get us wrong! But ultimately, it’s health and strength that you’re aiming for. These exercises will ensure that you have the energy to enjoy the outdoors this summer!

While we definitely encourage you to try any or all of these tips...if all else fails, just kick back with your Nuknuuks and ENJOY!
