Nuknuuk on: How to clean and keep looking fresh

Have your slippers seen better days? Here are a few easy fixes to keep your slippers looking fresh and new.

Women wearing Nuknuuk Slippers

First, let’s review some facts about sheepskin and leather. Sheepskin is renowned for its insulating properties.  It’s also hypoallergenic and is therefore unlikely to cause allergic reactions.  Sheepskin fibers absorb moisture, keeping your feet toasty and dry.  Hint: Try wearing your Nuknuuk slippers without socks.  The soft feeling of sheepskin against your bare feet is heavenly!

Slipper Maintenance

Nuknuuk slippers are great because you can wear them anywhere and at anytime. They are fashionable, comfortable and made with high-quality materials.

The outside of my slippers looks worn

If the suede or sheepskin outer of your slipper is looking worn out, you can freshen it up with the use of a suede eraser and brush. Start by rubbing any marks or dry dirt gently with the eraser, increasing pressure as needed. Once any dirt has been removed, finish up with the brush which can be used all over the suede to keep it looking fantastic. We really like this brush and eraser set. You can also use a clean nail brush or toothbrush if you don’t have a suede brush.

The sheepskin lining of my slippers needs some TLC

To keep the sheepskin lining of your slippers looking fresh, use a dog grooming brush to fluff the fibers as well as loosen and remove any dried dirt. We like this brush, but any stiff, bristled brush will do.

My slippers are smelly

We love wearing our Nuknuuks barefoot. Unfortunately, this can sometimes result in smelly slippers. To remedy this, sprinkle baking soda on the inside of the slippers. Use your fingers to gently rub it into the sheepskin lining and to make sure that it is spread evenly. Leave overnight. When you’re ready, shake out the baking soda. Use the dog grooming brush and your fingers to remove any baking soda that may be left.

I’m cooking and I just dropped my delicious tomato sauce/chicken soup/chipotle aioli on my slippers!

We’ve all been there! As soon as the slippers become soiled, try to blot up as much of the stain as possible with a dry, clean cloth. If the stain is oil-based, once you’re done blotting, cover the stain with cornstarch. Let the cornstarch sit for a few of hours or overnight, then brush it off. If the stain is still visible, use the suede eraser and brush combo to finish the clean-up.

Should I use detergents made for suede and sheepskin?

Although these can be used as an absolute last resort, they can fade the natural fibers in suede and sheepskin. If you would like to try using detergent, make sure to test a small area for colorfastness. We have found in almost all cases that the suede eraser and brush combo do a better job of cleaning up any mess than detergent.

The NOT-to-do list

  • Never machine wash and/or dry slippers
  • Never leave slippers in the sun to dry

 Our final piece of advice

And lastly, if your mother used to say “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” in this case, she was right! To keep your slippers looking great, use a suede and leather protector spray before wearing them. Before spraying, always test a small area to ensure that there are no fading or colour change issues.
